The agentic part is where they actually do something, complete a task or engage with multiple apps to complete a task. Commonly used agents would be something like a travel agent who checks your calendar and schedules a golf holiday or business trip, then books your travel and accommodation, meals and entertainment. This can be done autonomously if you want. Or the agent can confirm with you which items to book and put in to your calendar. Pretty cool either way.

Originally created by Anthropic who own Perplexity it is an ‘open source’ protocol to create standardised system for AI agents and applications to connect or interact with third party or external applications, tools, data or services. This is currently how AI systems access and use or work with others AI tools or systems. It is like a common language tool that creates a bridge for one AI tool to work with another or many others. It is often cited as being an API for AI.

Anyone who says they are an AI Expert is either brave or dumb, except in very few cases. Although the world is awash with people claiming to be ‘AI Experts’.

Keeping up with all the rapid advances is very challenging. And for the most part not necessary. We are mere students, looking to make use of a small number of applications, in order to do specific tasks to save time for us and our clients.

AI is just part of our day, of our toolset and yes we use AI multiple times a day, much like we Google things, we ask questions and do tasks using AI tools like Gemini or ChatGpt.

What is GPT?
In ChatGPT the GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, a large language model (LLM) which uses deep learning to generate supposedly ‘human like’ content, based on a large dataset of content upon which it has trained. OpenAI have numerous models such as o.3 or 4.0 etc.
Separately and more important to understand, GPT is simply ‘general purpose technology’, much like we got the inventions of the steam engine in 1712, electricity in 1800’s, the printing press 1440, the internet around 1970 and now we have artificial intelligence (AI). The terms do get bandied about a lot. And the smart people at Open AI and Google, Meta or Perplexity do not help with their confusing naming conventions for their LLM Large Language Models and applications. The main thing to know is that you will use this general purpose technology and many of these tools. But many of the so called Frontier Models or first movers will get swallowed up or passed out, so you do not need to know the difference between Llama 3.0, Claude Sonnet 3.7 and Gemini 2.5 Flash. You can press a button and light up a room, without being an electrical engineer. If you are to invest any of your time, check out how you can save time or money, increase output or productivity or simply use the technology to make life easier for you. That is the whole point of the new technology in the first place.
